How to design your programme

Studying Biomedical Sciences at the Radboudumc means that you have a lot of freedom to design a program that suits your ambitions and qualities best. To help you translate your future vision into a concrete programme, you will need to make the following choices:

  1. A specialisation. A specialisation in the Master BMS is a biomedical area/topic. There are 7 specialisations which the students can choose from. An eighth option is for student to assemble their Master’s programme individually and design his/her own specialisation (free specialisation).
  2. A profile. Do you envision yourself as someone who is primarily doing research, assumes a role as an advisor or consultant, or is involved in communication of scientific information?
  3. Other choices. In addition to a specialisation and profile you can further specialise or broaden your Master with additional courses. This way you can cover additional biomedical topics (diseases, mechanisms, methodology) that interest you.
Last but not least, with the choice of your internships and literature thesis you create an individual Master’s programme that gives you a unique biomedical profile.

It is important to regularly discuss you study plans with your specialisation coordinator. Plans for internships, literature thesis and external/individual courses need to be submitted for approval by the Board of Examiners. You can read the details about these procedures in this prospectus.

Requirements

Information on knowledge requirements can be found in the Onderwijs- en Examenregeling at Examinations and regulations.

We provide you with ample opportunities to pursue your ambitions and individualise your programme. Still, some requirements apply. That is, your programme must include:

  1. Courses and internships amounting to at least 120 ECs, as approved by the Board of Examiners
  2. Research profilestudents need to take at least 6 ECs of profile specific courses AND at least 18 ECs of other courses delivered by the Radboudumc in the context of the master’s programme in Biomedical Sciences
  3. Consultancy and communication profilestudents need to take 12 ECs of profile specific courses AND at least 18 ECs of other courses delivered by the Radboudumc in the context of the master’s programme in Biomedical Sciences
  4. At least one ≥30 ECs research internship (two for students of the research profile considering that their profile internship is also a research internship, see next item)
  5. At least one ≥30 ECs profile-internship (for students of the research profile this simply is a second research internship)
  6. A 6 ECs literature thesis
  7. No more than one minor delivered by the Radboudumc in the context of the bachelor’s programme in Biomedical Sciences, provided that this minor has not been completed already in the context of this programme
  8. No more than 12 ECs of courses that are not reasonably related to the field of biomedical sciences
  9. Students should attend at least 3 Radboud Integrity Rounds during their Master’s programme. More information and subscription: radboudumc.nl/researchintegrityround

Students who have NOT followed the course MED-B3WI ‘Thinking critically about science’ during their Bachelor or premaster (this course is part of the Bachelor Biomedische Wetenschappen at the Radboud University) need to include:

10.The course MED-BMS01 Thinking critically about science (this course is NOT part of the 6 EC + 18 EC in point 2 or the 12 EC + 18 EC in point 3).

For students with a research profile, the profile-internship is in fact a research internship. This means that they will have to complete a minimum of two internships, at least one of which entails more than 30 ECs. See under ‘Internships’ for details.

Approval from the board of examiner for study components

The Board of Examiners needs to approve the following study activities:

  • planned internships (application by OSIRIS Case)
  • planned literature thesis (application by standard form)
  • courses to be taken outside the Radboudumc (application by standard form)

Our own BMS courses at Radboudumc are automatically approved and do not require submission of any documents to the Board of Examiners. Make sure you thoroughly read the requirements mentioned above so that you know the minimum number of EC you need to obtain from internal (Radboudumc) BMS courses within your Master's.

Below you can find more information about the procedures for internships (OSIRIS Case), thesis and courses outside Radboudumc. Including the details about methods for approval by the Board of Examiners.

Study plan not required from January 2021:

From January 2021 it will no longer be necessary to submit a study plan to the Board of Examiners. The study plan was a growing document in which all (planned) study activities were included. From now on you only need specific approval for the activities mentioned above. For each of these activities there is a separate form or OSIRIS Case procedure. Below you can find more specific information.

You should regularly discuss your study plans with your Specialisation Coordinator. In the BMS Brightspace course you can find a format make an overview of your study plans  (go to Content > Coaching > Overview study plans) which you can discuss with your specialisation coordinator. This format is an aid to list planned courses, internships and literature thesis. It is not obligatory and does not have to be submitted to / approved by the Board of Examiners.
