Introduction into the specialisations and specialisation coordinators (pdf, 388 kB)

In the Master BMS you choose a specialisation to further improve the structure and depth in your programme. Specifically, the course offering of the first course periods in the BMS programme have been subdivided into 7 specialisations which the students can choose form. An eighth option is for student to assemble their Master’s programme individually and design his/her own specialisation (free specialisation). As such, the specialisations on offer are:

  1. Immunology and host defence
  2. Clinical human movement sciences
  3. Epidemiology
  4. Health Technology Assessment
  5. Drug Safety and Toxicology
  6. Molecular Medicine
  7. Medical Neuroscience
  8. Free specialisation

Each specialisation consists of 4-6 courses of 3 ECTS in the period Sep-Dec. A specialisation provides substantive structure and depth on a number of core topics. Coordinators of the courses assembled in a specialisation align their courses in terms of coordination, structure and content/level build-up. The entry level of the successive courses will therefore be higher on those core subjects. Following a specialisation is not mandatory, but the student must ensure that he/she meets the entrance level of courses he/she wants to take.

A student is free to compile his/her own set of courses. So you are allowed to only follow a part of a specialisation or take courses from different specialisations (= free specialisation). But please be aware: if you jump into a specialisation course without following the previous specialisation courses you may lack required prior knowledge. It is the students responsibility to judge whether he/she can take the course taking into account the required prior knowledge. Prior knowledge of each course is included the course information in the List of BMS courses in this prospectus. More extensive prior knowledge information will be included in Brightspace.

The specialisation courses are scheduled in the first course periods. The student determines the further course package. There are many more courses in the subsequent periods with which students can further specialize or broaden their Master.

Specialisation coordinators

7 specialisation coordinators take responsibility for the content and coaching of students within each specialisation. In addition to coaching the students, the specialisation coordinator represents and evaluates the specialisation and monitors/promotes the coherence, depth and structure of the specialisation.

Students who choose the free specialisation can choose the specialisation coordinator who is most suited to guide them during the master (taking into account the topics he/she wants to include in the Master).
